Best optical mouse with long battery life? by
BatteryLife
I currently use a Dell optical mouse that came with my Dell WinXP
media center. Unfortunately the mouse uses up batteries very fast! My
computer is left on 24 hours day, and usually the mouse needs two new
AA batteries every 2 - 3 weeks.
A mouse with rechargeable batteries would be a better...

Dial-up Modem Speed of 56 Mbps? by
Radium[_2_]
Hi:
Is it possible to obtain a 56 Mbps connection using 1,000 dial-modems
with a 1,000 different telephone ports and numbers?
Each line gives a max of 56 Kbps, so if 1,000 are used, could this
give a max of 56 Mbps?
Thanks,

Thermal pad or Thermal paste? by
Vin
hey there,
after some excessive amount of case modding to fit 4 additional
suckholes/blowholes (3 in the side case blowing IN and 1 on top of case
blowing OUT), i've finally managed to bring my case temperatures under
control -- about 6C above the room ambient (ambient is 28C, case is 34C).
But my...

what do i need to write DVDs? by
Marcellus Wallace
Ok, so I'm looking for advice on what sort of computer equipment I need for
the project I'm taking on. I work at a talent agency and we want to be able
to put together our actors' demo reels on DVD. Up to now, we have been using
video tape. For a bunch of different reasons that are pretty obvious,...

Standard or Widescreen monitor? by
Bazzer Smith
I will be buying a new monitor but which type should I buy?
I will admit I am not widescreens biggest 'fan', however what I
like is pretty immaterial as I can't control the format in which
other people produce 'media'.
I currently have a bog standard 14" CRT monitor but I think I will
be going...

Painting a CRT & Brightness Problem by
Travis King
I'm thinking about painting a CRT that I have black to match my computer as
the picture quality is great but the beige looks horrible. It's a Compaq
P110 21" and I picked it up for $10. My Proview 19" that I have is black
and matches my computer, but I think the gamma went out or something in...

Thoughts, tips, suggestions on what UPS to use? by
Doc[_2_]
I've got two computers - a PIV and a PIII that share a monitor. I use
them primarily for doing audio/video.
I thought I'd look into a UPS. What I'm looking for is mainly
something to guard against momentary power outs that might happen in
the middle of tweaking a file or the like. When I hear the...

Better HDD cooling by contact with case or open to air? by
lonra
I want to cool my one of my hard drives but without using a fan.
(A) Is it better to have the smooth metal side of the HDD resting on the
metal of the PC case.
OR
(B) Is it better to have the drive mounted (using the side screws) with
air above and below it. The airflow is minimal.

AMD/Linux vs Intel/Microsoft by
E
Hello
You can't help to notice the significant change in hardware and software at
the moment. A somewhat interesting scenerio is playing out.
AMD has its x86-64 architecture, which can run 32-bit applications rather
well, and promises to be able to run 64 bit applications, when they come
out,...

Cheap fire suppression system for a PC? by
ShadowTek[_5_]
I would like to install a small fire detection/suppression system for my
computer. I've seen a lot of rediculously expensive stuff online, but
I'd like to spend as little as possible.
Surely there's something that could be had for little more than the cost
of a small hand-held fire-extinguisher,...

How do TINY speakers produce such BIG sound? by
Andy
Over the last few years electronic devices have produced some impressive
sounds from a tiny crappy looking almost-flat speaker.
For example, many cells phones have a "no hands" mode where the tiny
speaker easily projects the sound for several yards.
Another example is my USB memory device which...
