[OT]How do I clear a Java cache? by
Cyde Weys
I'm trying to program a Java Applet on my Linux computer using javac.
As such, I'm using a web browser (specifically, Mozilla) using the Java
Run-time environment test my applet. However, no matter how many times
I hit the "Refresh" button in the browser, it doesn't update the applet.
This makes...

[OT] unable to record video on screen by
GRL
I apologyze because I understand that maybe this is not the right newsgropu,
but I'm not able to find out a more appropriate one.
My problem: I'm unable to record any videos on screen, even if I've tried to
do it with a lot of programs, both free and shareware. I mean: if I try to
record a
video...

[OT] Ultimate Interface. by
Andoni
Hello,
I have been asked by a charity in my home town to consult on getting a
computer system in to manage their rota of slightly over 300 volunteers
filling about 180 different duties (time slots) in a week.
The biggest problem they have without a doubt is getting the 60-80 year old
volunteers...

[OT] Things to back up when doing a clean reinstall of Windows XP Pro by
Holy Moly
Looks as though my POS IBM HD is about to go any day now. So, I'm
planning on reinstalling XP Pro on a new HD and was wondering what I
should back up, so that I'll have most if not all of the settings,
both for Windows and for my programs.
I know it's a rather broad and general question, but I'd...

Vince[_3_]
I want to get something like a pen cam ("spy pen") to record business
meetings secretly.
Are there any very small cell phones with camera which might be nearly as
small as these?

I'm looking for a way to stop RF interfence in a taxi, from the

Skeleton Man
Hi all,
I have a logitech z-340 speaker set and I want to get the grille off the front

AC in wires go all the way inside the box and not to the...

[OT] Inductive clamp by
Skeleton Man
Hi,
I have a wiring loom with at least 25 wires, and I need to check voltages on
each of them. They all terminiate into a couple of plugs, in which the pin
sockets are far too small to get a mulimeter probe into. It's simply not
practical to cut each one, test, and re-solder (not to mention...

I dunno, this university newsgroup server is like crap. It stopped
getting new messages for two days, then it went down for another day,
and now it's back up and it looks like I've posted some stuff multiple
times. Oh well. Sorry about that.

[OT] Grounding by
Skeleton Man
Hi,
I have a fairly old (circa 1980) marantz stereo receiver, which has an
annoying humm to it.
I reduced a lot of the hum by replacing a couple of large caps in the power
supply, but it still humms and the only time it doesn't is if I firmly hold
the heatsink attacked to the amplifier chip.. ...

[OT] DMM via soundcard ? by
Skeleton Man
Hi,
Can anyone reccomend a decent product or kit for building a DMM that runs
off a PC sound card ?
I have a perfectly good DMM, but I want to measure voltage fluctuations over
a period of time (say 24 hours), and obviously I need a way to record this
data.
I have a simple server (P300, 64MB,...

[Maybe OT] What causes "bad blocks" to appear in disk drives by
Chaos Master
Hello people.
I have an oldish 800MB hard drive here which is still working (it stores some
audio files).
Recently, after a power surge, it developed a "bad block" (4kb marked as bad),
but it still works correctly.
Q: What is a "bad block" in a hard drive?
Physical damage?
