M2N-MX power management under XP by Yousuf Khan
I've got a machine with an M2N-MX mobo. This thing doesn't seem to allow power management under XP! Even basic things like Standby and Hibernate are missing. When you press the "Turn Off Computer" button, the only options are Restart and Turn Off; Standby is greyed out, and Hibernate isn't even...

ACPI 2.0 power supply? by Yousuf Khan
As part of my ongoing fight to get that one POS Asus Nforce motherboard going properly, Asus tech support is telling me that I have to make sure that my power supply is ACPI 2.0 compliant. I know this is nothing but a bull**** excuse, something they're telling me to get them off their backs,...

PCI subdevice and subvendor IDs by Franc Zabkar
Are the PCI subdevice and subvendor IDs for various chipset components programmed into the chipset, or are they programmed into an external EEPROM? For example, I have an ECS motherboard with an SiS 746/963 chipset. The USB 1.1 (SiS 7001) and 2.0 (SiS 7002) controllers in the southbridge are...

PCI-E video cards on Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe --- limitations?? by Carlos Moreno
I'm having trouble setting up my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe; no a priori reason to believe it may be defective. I'm connecting an AMD64 X2 4200+, with 2GB of DDR400 RAM (two pairs), and a PCI-E x16 video card with chipset nVidia (GeForce 6600 LE). The thing won't boot, with beep code: long - short -...

Is there an issue with CPU-Z and P35 chipset? by Pooh-Man
It's giving me the wrong cpu speed and clock cycles on my P5K mb. In Vista64 it keeps fluctuating between 6x333mhz and 9x333mhz. On XP it is always reading 6x333mhz. I have disabled speedstep and set the cpu manually to 9x333mhz in the bios. It is an E6850 cpu so 9x333mhz is the correct setting.

No POST when more than 3.5GB memory installed? by amn0270
I have a client with an Asrock P4V88+ motherboard on a WinXP Home machine. He had been running with 2GB of memory. He wanted to double that so I confirmed how much his board supported, 4GB with a max of 1GB per slot and ordered 4 pieces of Crucial 1GB. When all 4 chips are installed the system...

some Opteron / SMP questions by Dan Lenski
Hi all, I have a few (probably naive) questions about Opteron processors and SMP that I wasn't able to clarify elsewhe * Is there any actual hardware difference between 1xxx, 2xxx, and 8xxx? Or is it just forced lock-out... just like how CPU manufacturers lock multipliers, or disable one core...

Is this 2 a version that does nothing to do with number of processors? Is it an indication that four processors are arranged in some kind of pairs? What is this 2? Are all four processors equal in all respects?

AOpen MP915-X - cannot find a CPU by Wolfgang's Daddy
I'm looking to purchase an AOpen MP915-X, and I'm not clear about the CPU. The specs claim it needs a Pentium-M or Celeron-M with a Socket 479, but all I can find is CPU that are Socket 478. Any body clare to clarify this? Or point me to a website that carries the Socket-479? The intent is to...

cpu pins - architecture correlation? (beginner question) by [email protected]
I'm curious about how the number of pins on a cpu correlates to underlying architecture. For example on a picture of an old 8086 I counted 40 pins. From what I've read the 8086 was an 16 bit architecture. The 80386 had 68 pins. From what I've read this chip was the first from Intel to support...
