Servers and benchmarking by Jez T
I have had a few queries on server performance recently, and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions: Firstly, how do you guys go about benchamrking an older server. How do you work out what performance benefit you'll get from moving up to a newer server. For instance, if you have 4...

Power on --- on by Phil
Nutcracker, or another resident "expert" I have a slew of dl380's, any easy way to make them start booting/power-up when power is applied to the power supplies. I didn't see anything in the setup about power on defaults. My thought is I have some servers and arrays I want to be able to fire...

Upgrade from P2 to P3 PL3000 by Joe Bloggs
Hi I have recently obtained a Proliant 3000 dual P2-333. It also has a Smart 2DH card slotted but unconnected. Running 360M RAM - 2K Advanced Server SP4. I do not use it as a server in the strictest sense (internet server), more as a backup tool for 2 small P3 PCs on a home ME...

Hey LC.. Need one of these? by Rick F.
I found this posted to my local Craigslist (LA area) -- not sure I'd want one of these shipped -- sounds really big! It's located near you in Chicago -- you're there correct? http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/sys/218561192.html

Fedora 5 ACPI by [email protected]
Hi I've put FC5 on an old ML370 and it won't control the fans. I have the Software Maintenance Packs up to v7.4 with the Linux Proliant Support Pack, but it won't install in Fedora - says it only supports RHEL3&4 I think I can fiddle it, but... Has anyone done this before?

Question regarding boot rom's interaction w/ my SmartArray 5300... by Rick F.
Hi guys again.. I received my battery pack yesterday from ServerWorlds all nicely packaged (I'll be giving them high marks for that!) and shutdown my Proliant 6400 to install the batteries. Anyway, upon startup, it complained about the battery voltage being low -- something I expected. So, I...

Wake Up ... Q about a ML370 G1 by Nut Cracker
Hello Friends, I have had this machine for quite a while, and its been great. I am trying to upgrade it from 733Mhz to 1Ghz processors. Everything looks good, until it starts to boot into windows. Then, the system just powers off, waits about 10 seconds, then powers on and starts the post...

Moving from an SA3200 -- SA5300.. by Rick F.
I got my SA5300 the other day and tried using it this evening.. After playing games with the SmartStart CD and whatnot, I was finally able to boot Linux (FC3) on it -- to a point.. It gets to the part where it tries to mount all of the various partitions but fails since apparently /dev/ida/c0d0p4...

Use of PCI-X cards in Proliant 6400R server.. by Rick F.
Ok.. This one has me a bit stumped -- mostly because of the terms that compaq uses to describe their PCI architecture in their spec-sheets.. The Proliant 6400's spec sheet says : "# Six 64-bit slots (five PCI Hot Plug and one shared PCI/ISA)" What exactly is 64-bit PCI slots? I think I found the...

Compaq Fibre Cards for Fibre Array and Later EVA by Will
What would be a good choice for a Compaq fibre channel card used in a clustering application. Today the back end will be the older fibre channel array (4100) but there is a potential in the future to use EVA, so I need a card compatible with either application. -- Will

Use of Compaq 146Gb U320 drives on a Proliant 6400 w/ SA3200.. by Rick F.
Well.. I picked up my two 36.4Gb spares today for my Proliant and got back to the office to find a note from the guy I got them from saying that he had some other drives available if I was interested and he thought he had quite a few of the 146Gb drives (I'm assuming the U320 models) and that he...

Where do you buy your DLT tapes -- retail or Internet? by Rick F.
Jeff/LC et-al, Do you buy your DLT tapes (if you use them still) online or via one or more retail stores? I've called a few places and nobody seems to carry them except via mail-order places.. Is there some chain that might be available here in the LA area that might have them or is my best bet...

Stupid volume backup question.. by Rick F.
Hi all.. Since I'm pondering over the purchase of an upgraded filesystem with possibly a new controller, I've got to deal with moving my existing data (on 4x36.4Gb drives) to the new drives (either 2 or 4 of 146Gb drives). What I'm planning on doing is using my recently acquired DLT 35/70 tape...
