can software break hardware?!? by
[email protected]
Hi all,
I was a firm believer that SW could not break HW apart from maybe
playing with monitor resolution and such. Now I'm not so sure.
I'd apreciate your advice on this. To cut a long story short, this is
what I did.
I installed windows XP on a disk then used ntfsclone (linux tool) to
clone...

Got the Adware from hell, Rant by
Joe
I would love to run into the ass wipe that wrote the adware I have on my
computer right now. I would inflict a slow and painful death on him, video
taping the entire long drawn-out tortuous event then send it to Dateline, 60
minutes, 20/20 and all the rest. I would not even worry about being...

Setting a LCD monitor beyond its max resolution by
Bazzer Smith
Earlier today I managed to set my monitor to 1600X1200 which is beyond
its max of 1280X1024, however it produced a useable 'picture' for some
applications (I could play poker for example, and display 4 full tables)
however now when I set it to that resolution is produce an unusable

Is a 10000 rpm drive Worth it??? by
James Padolsey
I currently have 2x 200gb 7200rpm drives on my desktop.
As always, i want it all to go a bit faster:
Is it worth getting a 15000rpm scsi or a 10000rpm sata or just get a
mammoth 500gb drive (7200). I want to speed up boot time and make the
applications run a little faster.
If i decided to get a...

Dead On-board Ethernet by
Alan Jeffs
I have two identical machines, 18 months old (out of warranty!) that I
bought from Staples for my twin girls. Their supplier at that time was
Proteva - now out of business. The network connectivity on both has been
nothing but trouble, kicking out at ~3 month interval. At first I returned...

20GB hard drive doesn't auto-detect by
[email protected]
I tried to hook up a 20GB hard drive as the
master in my old PC, a 200MHZ Pentium home-built
job that I bought used and that served me well
through a succession of hard drives up to 4GB
running Windows 98 and Linux. The auto-detect
in the BIOS wouldn't detect the 20GB HD properly,
showing a size of...

power supply making a high static sound by
geletine
I can hear a high screeching sound, when i click the on button nothing
happens, the fan does not go on either.
I am hoping its a power supply fault and not the mobo, its a Antec
SmartPower 2.0 350 Watt ATX12V PSU which is not even a year old. The
last couple of days when it was working I had to...

Is this motherboard OK with an overclocked Intel D 805? by
altcomphardware
Hi guys. I'm planning to build my second overclocked Intel D 805 system
after having an excellent experience with an Asus P5ND2-SLI + Intel D
805 @ 3.33GHz.
The motherboard below looks promising - cheap, DDR2-667 and with
onboard graphics.
IMVHO overclocking any further requires a DDR2-800 mobo +...

power supply for Intel Pentium 4 531 by
[email protected]
I just bought an Intel Pentium 4 531 CPU and motherboard. Been having
some trouble with it. So I'm wondering if the CPU/Motherboard is
defective or if my 350W power supply is insufficient? What is the Power
requirement for the Intel Pentium 4 processors? I can't seem to find
this information...

Postcode wildcard by
Astrax
ISTR there is a sort of wildcard entry which can be used as the last
part of a postcode to refer to an area.
It can usually be used when a web page needs a full postcode.
For example, if I had a post code of
BS49 4ER
then I could use the wildcard to refer to only
BS49

Athlon Mobile CPU compared to Standard CPU by
Colin
Appologies if this not a correct group to ask this question.
I have just purchased a ccheap new E-Sytem Desk-top PC. The suppliers
specification for the the PC quotes the CPU as a "AMD Athlon 3000+".
However, windows XP quotes the Processor as "Mobile AMD Athlon(tm)XP-M
Processor 3000+". Should I...

Installing USB 2.0 on "older" PC by
Steve W
I've just realised that my AMD Athlon 1.41GHz PC (with 512Mb RAM and XP Pro)
has only got USB 1.1. No wonder I have problems with some of my devices!
Two questions. First, can I simply install a (relatively inexpensive) PCI
card with some USB 2.0 ports, and them run a multiport powered USB 2.0...

Is this sort of thing any good?

HP printer is not picking up paper by

I have an HP DeskJet 890C printer that still prints well, and even has
drivers available for Vista.
I like it, and don't want to replace it if I don't have to. It uses the HP
23 color cartridge, and HP 45 Black cartridge which hold a lot more ink than
the new cartridges.
The problem is that it...

Shut down hard drive by

I am running 5 hard drives in a PC running XP Pro. 1 of the drives

seems silly and like a lot of wear & tear on the disks to keep them
running 24/7 like the other disks. Is it possible to shut down certain
disks after x hours...
