defective main board or cpu ? by
Robert L.
Hi,
One of my computer is down right now. I'm trying to figure out what's wrong
with it.
It can only be an hardware issue, since it doesn't even POST.
I remove the Sound Card, Ethernet card. I replace the video card with a
known working one. The memory have been swap / remove / exchange.
These...

External Hard Drives for Storage by
Roving Mouse
I'm thinking of getting a large capacity external (USB 2, I'm not "firewire
ready) HD for storing msuic, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions, or
advice?
I do burn CD's, but would like to have a larger library of media files
available - looking at external rather than internal for ease...

Did I cook my old lady's computer? by
Dr. J. Smith
My wife brought home 2 sticks of DDR ram to replace 133 for her computer
(ECS/K7S5A Athlon/1.4 ) and a new heatsink and fan to replace the old one
(too loud). The old one didn't look much different than the one she bought.
I cleaned the grease from the CPU and put the new one on just to hear...

dial-up wiring question by
Dave Gower
I am in the middle of a complete house rewiring, including running phone
lines. Since my walls and ceilings are open, I have cart blanche about
running wires, so I'd like to get this right while wiring is easy.
Unfortunately since I live in the country I can only get dial-up :( Worse,

I think my power supply is dead by
Cyde Weys
Last night, in the middle of a game, my computer just went dead and
refused to boot up. I think the problem may be the power supply (450W,
made by "Rhycom" if you've ever heard of them). I've removed the power
supply from the case and tried plugging it in and nothing happens. I
just want to...

Should I use 512 133 SDRAM or 256 DDR pc2100? by
Jimmy B Jones
This might be a stupid question, but I just picked up a K7S5A Athlon board
for $20 and it has 2 SDRAM slots and 2 DDR slots. Should I should put in 2
x 256 SDRAM or 1 256 DDR pc2100? Don't know if it will influence a choice,
but I am thinking about overclocking it sometime down the road.
Thanks

Stuff in the XP event log by
Graeme
Hi All,
I have a new XP system (3GHz P4, 1G DDR, 120G HDD - specific details
available if needed) and have noticed a couple of things in the event log
which I don't understand.
Sometimes, when this system starts up, it has an error within explorer.exe.
Eventually the system comes up, but several...

Intel P4 Boxed - New Thermal Pad Color Change? by
bucko
Anyone notice that the Intel factory thermal pad on the new Retail Boxed P4-3.0C is
silver/gray colored compared to that found on the Retail Boxed P4-2.4C SL6Z3, which is
black.
I wonder if they changed thermal pad material composition on the faster P4s?

My friends' PC has MBM5 installed and the power supply thermometer is

My second PC is giving me problems. It is one that was given to me, and
since I have no POST (blank screen) I can't tell you a great deal. Normally
it runs 24/7 running SETI on WinXP.
It is a MSI KM2M Combo (MS6738) motherboard. This morning I found it

newbie question about dvd-r/cd-r by
harrypotter
Hello!
I have a newbie question about dvd-r's and cd-r's. I've noticed some
computers are coming out with both a dvd-r and cd-r. Others only have
a dvd-r.
Is there an advantage of having both a dvd-r and a cd-r? Or is it a
redundant feature?
One last question, can anyone please explain this:

I'm looking for the best ratio of gigabytes I can get per dollar. The

IDE-compatible. Any suggestions? Also, reliability is a good quality
as well.
