Large ATAPI HDD (320GB) for DELL Dimension 3000 by
thricipio
Well, not large by today's standards, but it's large compared to what
was shipping with these PC's when they were new (2004/2005).
»» NOTE ««
I've already tried looking for the answer in the DELL forums, but only

How would you ship a bare drive across the country? by
Andrew Hamilton
About a week ago, I asked for a recommendation for external enclosures
for hard drives. One of my needs was to carry the drive enclosures on
a plane, either in a carry-on item or in luggage.
Some people commented that the enclosures provided no protection for
the drive, except for scuffing. So...

Seagate Barracuda 1500Gb stopped running.. by
Geir
Hi,
A friend of mine came with an external disk enclosure containing the
above disk. It had fallen to the floor and failed to connect after that.
I hear a short burr from the disk every 3 seconds and it does not start
turning. Can it be the brake mechanism which does not release?
We have...

HD rattles when shaken by

I notice that some modern HDs rattle when shaken.
Is this the sound of the head stack moving about on the loading ramp?

Anatomy of a hard drive by

I thought the following links may be useful to those who wish to
understand what's inside (and outside) their hard drives. I learned a
lot, anyway.

Modern HDs and Zone Bit Recording by
Franc Zabkar
Here is what HD Tune's developer(s) consider to be a typical
performance graph for a hard drive (160GB Maxtor):
http://www.hdtune.com/HDTune_Benchmark.gif
The graph shows 16 steps. AIUI, this corresponds to 16 zones of
constant angular bit density and is referred to as Zone Bit Recording.

external enclose 3.5" eSATA recommendations? (or not-recommendations) by
Andrew Hamilton
I need to get external enclosures for two Hitachi 3.5" HDD. One is
320 GB, the other is 1 TB. I need both USB and eSATA (at 3.0, not
1.5!)
Can anyone recommend or not-recommend specific models? The case has
to be strong enough to protect the drive when carried around in a
laptop bag or in...

Very slow SATA and eSata peformance by
Smarty
I have 3 PCs which each have a variety of internal SATA drives, and all of
which have external eSATA ports. The external eSATA ports were either
factory-provided (Dell) or added by me with controller cards from Addonics
and Rosewill with PCI-Express or PCI interfaces.
Regardless of which...

SDHC by
RSKT[_2_]
Hi all
I am comparing a Toshiba Class 6 4GB card with a Lexar Class 4 Platinum II
4GB card.
Rightfully at class 6 the Toshiba should be faster (if you believe the
promotion material) but strangely the Toshiba is rated at sustained 6MB/s vs
the Lexar 9MB (60x). So which is actually faster?
Thanks...

USB drive gets assigned a letter sometimes and sometimes not by

I have a 500GB external drive, connected through USB2. Recently it's
started not showing up as a drive letter under XP, until you restart it
a few times. This only happens if the drive has been turned off and you
turn it on while the computer is running. If you turn it on before
turning the...

can I repartition a USB external disk? by
George Orwell
Can one run a program like FDISK on an external USB disk?
Reason = I wish to format a USB drive to only 64 GB FAT32.
I have a recording device which writes to a USB drive,
but only handles FAT32. Now the smallest drive I can find
retail is 160 GB. A 64 GB flash drive is fairly expensive.
I can...
