RAID Controller Failover by
Steve Holly
I'm an IT admin starting to look at building a SAN for my company and I'm
curious if anyone out there can explain how some of the popular RAID vendors
(i.e. EMC, Chaparral, Infortrend) handle failover (resuming I/O with another
RAID controller after one has failed)? I'm mostly interested in...

fried hard disk stops power by
-keevill-
I've got a Seagate HD which seems to have been the victim of a power surge
and now the PC will not even spin the fan if it's connected. Something to do
with the safety cut-out on the mainboard to stop damage. Is there any smart
workaround to recover any data from this disk?
As I cannot get the...

WD. SE drives still ok? by
Michael
In some newsgroup, perhaps it was this one a fellow mentioned that Western
Digital special edition drives have been recently changed to a lighter
(cheaper) construction, may be basically the same as their lower cost ones
only with 8 mb cache and he feels are less reliable.
I have always used WD...

Whats the Diff?? WDC USB WD800B005 vs WDC800B008 by
BobLeavitt
From the specs listed at the WDC website and on the spec sheets, these
drives are identical in every respect except that the case is slightly
different in appearance (although the dimensions are the same, to the
millimeter). The WDC800B005 (aka WD800B005RNN) is listed as a Series I
drive and the...

My floppy controller on my FIC P4-865PE MAX motherboard quit working
and I don't want to change boards so I was thinking about getting a
USB floppy drive but I don't know anything about them so I don't know
if you can put in a bootable disk and boot with it?
Will it take drive letter A: like a...

I currently have a DVD-ROM as the Primary Master and my hard drive is the
Secondary Master; and I want to add a zip drive and a CD-RW drive.

Maxtor HDD and Drive Image 2002: error 91. by
blade0r
Hello everybody,
I recently purchased a 120 GB Maxtor HDD to use it in combination with my
actual Western Digital one.
The WD disk has got two partitions, C: (containing the OS) and E: (this is
an extended partition).
The new Maxtor disk only contains one primary partition, D:.
Both of the disks...

The best partition for a 250 GB drive by
skyhydro
I just got a 250GB WD drive that I'm thinking to use as the boot disk.
I have two other physical disks with 60 GM each which I intend to use
for data. My question is what is the optimal partition size for a 250
GB drive for the best performance under WinXP?
Is there a performance issue if I leave...

Why can't they make a 2-speed hard drive? by
Johnny Hageyama
I don't mean a one that frequently speeds up and down during normal
operation but one that can be programmed for 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM
operation, much the way head seek speed can be programmed. I realize
that changing the speed would probably require losing all the data,
but some people don't need...

When I tried to reinstall XP, the install program failed with a blue
screen error "UMOUNTABLE something." I then noticed the partition table
was corrupted. I tried fixing with "EDITPART" and verified the
partitions with "FINDPART." There are multiple partitions on this disk.
The problem is: XP...

Any better way to wipe data from a HDD? by
Danny Jenkins
I was advised that in addition to fdisking and formating a hard disk
drive I should do the following, then fdisk and format again. Are the
following instructions a sure-fire way of erasing data?
Many thanks.

Get the Serial Number with Visual Basic by
Michael Wittmann
Hi folks,
I have to write a Visual Basic 6.0 Program and need to uniquely identify a
computer in a network and the user mustn't be able to change that id while my
program is running. So the Volume Serial Number of the HDD isn't a possibility,
because you can set the Volume SN whatever you want and...

external harddrive casings and questions. by
FreddyFoobar
Hello.
To make a long story short, I was 'tricked' into purchasing an external
harddrive which amounted to just an ibm 120GB harddrive put into a
cheap no name brand third party casing. (It was cheap, so I guess I
got what I deserved.)
Well, the third party casing is huge, and loud. And I want...
