Seagate 1tb thumping twice a second by
Nicholas[_2_]
I have a new 1tb Seagate 3.5" drive that periodically is going into
some kind of access mode where something internally is pulsing twice a
second... yet watching the system via filemon shows that there are no
actual i/o being performed with this disk, so it seems to be some sort
of internal routine...

puzzled about files on disk by

Hi.
Something baffles me. Perhaps someone here can explain it.
If I go to the properties of my C drive on my laptop, the size
reported is smaller than the total size of the files and folders on
drive C:

How can the size of all selected files and...

Can high voltage from power supply damage harddrive? by
mm
I just talked to my friend who gave me the Dell computer, and he said
that his repair guy told him the reason his harddrive failed may
(likely?) have been a surge or something coming from the power supply.
Is this a cause of harddrive failure?
A common cause?
A conceivable cause but really a...

How Do I Remove Data from USB Backup Drive Without Removing Backup Program? by
jim evans[_2_]
I've had very little experience with external USB drives made
especially for backup. I backup to ordinary hard drives using
software of my choosing, but several computer novice friends use these
USB backup drives.
It seems they come with backup software installed on them. Two of
these friends...

Do optical drives really need fans? by
Király
I have a USB external CD/DVD writer. Its fan has a bad bearing and
sounds like a helicopter. Can I just take the fan out? Is it really
needed? Home stereo DVD players don't have fans and I have never heard
of one overheating.
I use the thing to watch a DVD now and then, and to burn the...

interface. If connected by E-Sata the disc is recognized OK. If I use

solved with Disk Management- Import foreign disks. But every time I

OEM vs. Retail hard drive by
mm
I hope this isn't too stupid a question.
OEM vs. Retail hard drive. I'm not concerned about the warranty,
but that I've never installed a SATA drive before and this will be the
only drive on the computer.
I have XP Home or maybe Pro SP3.
Does a retail box contain drivers or instructions that...

WD raptor failures by
Lynn McGuire[_2_]
At one point, we had about 10 WD 150 GB 3.5" raptors around
here. The 7th one failed yesterday with the click of death.
Are others experiencing this massive failure rate with the WD
150 GB raptors ? I am replacing them with a WD Caviar Black
1 TB drive which I have not had fail yet.
Thanks,
Lynn

Will my 6.5 y.o. computer handle new drives? by
mm
All the SATA drives now seem to be SATA 3 Gb/s or higher.
My Dell Inspiron 4600 without a hard drive that a friend gave me was
sold in January 2004.
It's new enough to use curreent SATA drives, right?
I hope.
If not I guess I can find an older drive.

Strong physical USB flash drive/sticks with a keychain hole? by
Ant[_3_]
Hello.
I have a client who is currently disappointed with his two last USB
flash drives/sticks that broke from their keychain holes due to heavy
keys. He uses them with his keychains and never remove them. I noticed
his keys are heavy (tilted when connected to USB ports) and gravity pull
them...

User accounts have gone missing! by
Yousuf Khan
I have a perplexing problem here. I went on vacation outside of the
country, and when I got back my Windows 7 desktop lost almost all of its
user login accounts (5 altogether), except for one. The one that isn't
lost, cannot be logged into, as the password doesn't get accepted.
The machine also...

Current disk failure stats from Russia by
Arno[_3_]
Ha, found it again. Pretty interesting and conclusive. They do
not fear naming names, I guess they are not afraid of being sued.
They do have failure rates per manufacturer in relation to sales
and also have insights into age at failure per manufacturer.
While the sample of 4000 drives is not...

Does TRIM support help direct access file performance? by

I use direct access files, meaning updated in place, for many
purposes including:

. USENET article storage
. virtual disks
Will TRIM support in the drive affect the performance of solid state
disks used on my Windows 7 system? In particular, I don't see how
the drive would be...

My friend has a Win XP PowerSpec B647 desktop with two 250 GB hard

DVD/CD writer - do any brands last? by

On 7/20/2010 12:06 AM PT, John Turco typed:
I bought a generic eSATA PCI card, too.
External hard drives that the only way to go for backups now.
Quite true, and I crave eSATA's superior speed; USB 2.0 is merely
too damned slow.
Yeah, well USB3 just came out so...
