That should get you started. There are many others. This is by no
means an exhaustive list.

Perhaps this group should have a faq. What do you guys think? Slayer?
Everybody?

well, consider this a faq thread now.

I think it should cover what would be the anticipated initial questions
from someone who comes here for the first time. What webcam can I get
that will ..., or What webcam program does this ... The faq could have
links to the suppliers, and overview of hardware/software, etc. I can
never remember things in my head, so I generally go to google to try and
find the specific information I want to relay. If nothing else, I use
google to make sure I spell the website address correctly. A faq could
have all of this common stuff nice and handy. No need for me to look
stuff up myself just to direct someone to a website.

This faq might end up covering more than just webcam peripherals, but
this group tends to discuss software as much as hardware anyway. The
faq should probably reflect that.

Some of this info could be republished from online sources (websites,
google newsgroup archives, etc.). I can host the final faq on one of my
servers and I (or anyone) could post it occasionally to the group. (I
could probably set up a daemon to automatically post it once a week or
so.

For now, let's start an outline of what a faq should cover. Things like:

1 Getting started with a webcam
camera selection
software
operating systems (win98-XP, Mac, Linux)
special concerns, like drivers
2 webcam hardware
types of webcams, cmos, ccd, capture cards
list of suppliers with links
list of sites using specific cams (for image quality evaluation)
3 webcam software
exhaustive list of programs, including links
a check list comparison chart of features for each cam program
4 where can I use my webcam?
webcam websites for cam hosting, chatting etc.

If anyone can add to this outline, please do so. Maybe after a few
days, we'll have an outline that will cover all the necessary topics.
We can then start to fill in the blanks.

OK, Maybe we need to back one step backwards.

Whoever wishes to participate on developing a faq, please add your
handle to the list. Your participation would include suggestions for
information addressing common questions to first time webcammers. You
are under no obligation to make a purchase, and no salesman will be
calling you.

Here the list so far:

The beginning of a faq outline. If you already have something to add to
the outline, add it here.

TrackerCam 4.12 and higher has a motion detection feature. In
addition, you can set the software to attempt to lock on and track the
object that is moving.
